Michele Viviani is a singer, instrumentalist, composer, and vocal teacher based in Bologna, Italy, born in Portomaggiore (FE). His artistic journey weaves together vocal research, teaching, and musical experimentation.

2.1 Education

Michele’s interdisciplinary training blends classical studies, modern vocal techniques, and embodied practices that have shaped his artistic identity:

  • He studied classical guitar with Maestro Paolo Ingrosso, who also introduced him to harmony.

  • He explored Gregorian chant with Maestro Federica di Leonardo and, at AERCO, with Maestro Luca Buzzavi, engaging with one of the oldest vocal traditions.

  • He worked on modern vocal technique with multiple teachers while also exploring body-based and expressive practices such as contemporary dance and theater, which enriched his approach to performance and audience engagement.

  • Among his most formative experiences was singing as a chorister in the Coro Euridice, directed by Maestro Pier Paolo Scattolin.

2.2 Teaching

Since 2013, Michele has taught singing privately. He worked as a vocal and ensemble music teacher at the Scuola di Musica Chiavi d’Ascolto in Bologna until 2019. He also led introductory vocal workshops for the Corale Polifonica Santa Rita and vocal technique labs for dancers at Selene Centro Studi. This teaching experience shaped his belief in music as a tool for awareness and personal growth.

2.3 Discographic Production

Michele’s artistic output is diverse, spanning singer-songwriter music, contemporary music, and rock.

2.3.1 Projects Inspired by Gregorian Chant: Between Contemporary Music and Rock

  • “Victimae” (2024):
A collection of five compositions for voices and percussion based on the Gregorian sequence Victimae Paschali Laudes, reimagined through a contemporary lens. The compositions draw inspiration from composers like Philip Glass, Arvo Pärt, and Meredith Monk, creating a hypnotic and meditative atmosphere.

  • “Dorian” (2026):
An album that expands on the same inspiration, enriching the sonic palette with guitars, synthesizers, effects, and psychedelic atmospheres. The style blends elements of progressive rock and electronic music.

2.3.2 The “Chamber Music” Project: From James Joyce’s Book

An ongoing project in collaboration with writer and translator Enrico Terrinoni, dedicated to setting James Joyce’s poetry to music. Two releases have been published so far, both under revision:

  • “SognoCapelliAcqua - Chamber Music vol.1” (2022);

  • “Five Songs by John Dowland - Chamber Music vol.2” (2023).

The project was premiered in Imola in May 2023, in collaboration with writer Andrea Pagani.
